Dividend Reinvestment Plan - DRIP

It is educational to watch TV and learn stock picking and retirement advice from Jim Cramer, Suze Orman, Clark Howard or Dave Ramsey, but I feel it is mutually beneficial to receive retirement investing advice from other members of the Blog community.

Listed below are three of my favorite videos about the topic of: Dividend Reinvesting, otherwise known as DRIP.

Sit back, relax, and learn from some of the best bloggers in the game today. Support your fellow man and always give credit where credit is due!

Update: Dividend Stock Picks for the Week of 8/20/12 to 8/24/12

Welcome back to Dividend Stock Investing for the Common Man! Thank you stopping by and supporting the idea of investing in dividend paying stocks for the long term. I wanted to recap last week's picks for you since it is important to review all investments on a weekly, if not daily, basis.

It was a 6 for 20 week. 30% of my picks increased in value. It was a very disappointing week as a whole for the NASDAQ and NYSE. Although we made some cash this week from
Apple Inc.(NASDAQ:AAPL) and Annaly Capital Management, Inc.(NYSE:NLY)  it is not how many times you win short term, but rather which investments can provide you with a steady income stream over the long term. When investing in dividend paying stocks you are protecting yourself from stock market volatility. If the market goes down one quarter, the dividend payment will help recoup the losses.

Let these companies work hard so they can maintain their dividend and increase it year over year. As a shareholder, it is like receiving a raise each year. Reinvest your dividends to maximize your profits!

Keep investing as much as you can on a daily or weekly basis. Perform your due diligence and invest in companies that you feel comfortable with. Do not risk your hard earned dollars by investing in unknown, unreliable companies.

Feel free to watch the great videos below, featuring some of this week's winners!

Are Target Date Retirement Funds Worth It?

I highly suggest investing your hard earned dollars into one of the following Target Date Funds only as a supplement to your Roth IRA dividend stock portfolio. If you ask me, investing in individual stocks is the way to go. If you plan on signing up for a Target Date fund, go ahead and pick one of these below.

BlackRock LifePath Target Date Funds
Fidelity Freedom Funds
J.P. Morgan SmartRetirement Funds

What are Target Date Funds? Click here for a complete recap. Here are some bullet points below:

  • Target date funds were first introduced in the early 1990s with BGI being the first institution to offer such products.
  • Target date funds are aimed at people planning for retirement and have appeal because they offer a life-long managed investment strategy so should remain appropriate to an investor's risk profile even if left accidentally un-reviewed.
  • Target Date, or age based funds are particularly attractive as default investment funds.
  • They do not offer a guaranteed return but offer a convenient multi-asset retirement savings strategy through a single outcome-oriented fund.
  • Target date funds' asset allocation mix typically provides exposure to return seeking assets, such as equities, in early years when risk capacity is higher, and becomes increasingly conservative as time progresses with exposure switched progressively towards capital-preservation assets, such as government- and index-linked bonds.
  • The funds are not without their critics, who point to the unexpected volatility of some near-dated target-date funds in the 2008 financial crisis, suggesting they were not as conservatively positioned as their name would imply. In response to this, the SEC and DoL hosted a joint hearing on Examining Target Date Funds in June 2009, which found that while target-date funds were generally a welcome innovation, disclosure had to be improved to ensure investors were fully aware of a target-date fund glide path  which may differ from manager to manager. The rules on disclosures for target-date funds were published by the SEC in 2010.

Retirement Advice Myths

Retirement is a very important step in one's life. It is the culmination of all of your hard work and years of financial planning. If I were you, I would start today, no matter what age you are, and open a Roth IRA and/or begin to contribute to a 401k.. of course if your job offers this excellent retirement vehicle.

While beginning your portfolio never feel inadequate. You are in charge of your future. Don't let your financial advisor coax you into the latest hot stock or a get rich scheme.

There are plenty of retirement myths out there today. Click play below to watch a great discussion about some of those myths.
